Zoe Larson (b.2000) is a photographer that uses techniques derived from visual ethnographies and documentary photography to document, explore, and preserve people and places close and abroad. The subjects represented in her most recent collection vary from different regions, tribes, and clans within the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Each tribe carries centuries of tradition within their Bilas, (traditional costume), performance, and ceremonies, which is represented in her photos. These images serve as a preservation of time and space, capturing old tribal traditions that may one day lose themselves in ever changing times. Every tribe photographed was interviewed about their origin stories, ideas of religion, traditional ceremony, sexism, globalization, etc.; therefore using photography as a form of research. These photos give the viewer insight into an unknown world rich in culture. This collection of photographs would not have been acquired without the two guides who planned and coordinated the trip from arranging the tribes and finding accommodations, a special thanks to Randy and David. Along with their extensive knowledge of Papua New Guinea, they also provided light and backdrops for some of the “studio shoots,” which in hindsight made the majority of the photos feasible given the conditions of lighting in the Highlands.
