These three illustrations show the growth and mood from pine needle/ sapling, to the beginning of a pine cone, to the complete pine cone. Each color is supposed to represent the overall sensation of being in those different stages of life. The lines all represent the different paths each of these living species and sentient beings can take throughout the course of existence.
